Next AFAC Club Night 11th December

Mondays meeting

Yes it’s that time of year again, not only is it Christmas time when we can spend time with family and friends, we can also enjoy great sport often fishing the dry fly and being able to wet wade. Great fun. Talking that, a dozen keen members fished the WAIPA RIVER for the Clubs Flyfishing Cup two weeks ago, members new and old with varying degrees of experience on some great water – see note below.

Remember that our Christmas Party is THIS COMING Monday the 11th of December at our normal venue the Panmure Yacht and Boating Club. John Bennett and his staff are cooking up a feast as they always do. Are YOU coming? We hope so and rather than walking in at the last minute, do give Ron Holmes a call on 09 535 8872 or email on its always a great occasion.

See you there John

Regards JOHN WHITE - Secretary

'Damning' rivers and lakes report: Nitrogen levels rising, fish threatened NZ Herald 27th April 2017

Dear Angler

The 2017 Kai Iwi Lakes Trout Fishing Competition will be held over the weekend of the 24th and 25th JUNE 2017 so come along, bring your partner, family and friends and make it a weekend to remember.

As always there will be a great selection of prizes up for grabs and a number of spot prizes. A barbeque lunch will be provided at the completion of the fishing competition on Sunday.

Juniors and children will be free to enter the competition and will not be required to hold a fish licence for the two days of the competition. This will be part of the Northland Fish & Game Council “Take a Kid" fishing promotion. Ideally they should be accompanied by a parent or guardian who holds a current fish licence. All adults entering the fishing competition must hold a 2016-17 Family, Whole Season or Winter Fish Licence OR purchase only a Northland 24 hour Fish Licence to cover the event.

The price of the tickets are not finalised at present as the hire charges for the formally known Kai Iwi Lakes Water Ski Club rooms are not known. Ticket sales will be available from the 22nd May 2017.

Northland Fish & Game are looking for sponsorship for this trout fishing competition so if anyone wishes to sponsor a prize, please contact Rudi, Andrew or Fay at the office.

The camping grounds at the lakes are open and bookings for camping can be made directly at Kai Iwi Lakes Camp Ground by phoning 09 439 0986 or email:

Otherwise, google “Kai Iwi Lakes accommodation” and there are a number of B&B’s to stay at near the Lakes. Please note the Kaipara District Council DOES NOT ALLOW DOGS within the Kai Iwi Lakes Domain.

We look forward to seeing you at Northland’s premier trout fishing event.

Happy Angling

The Team at Northland Fish & Game

This is F&G answer to Kaipara District Councel stopping the release of trout into Kai Iwi Lakes from 2018

Give them all the support you can.

Waiteti stream mouth. 4lb hen 48cm this morning 25th April.

Put this up on the website showing the fly I caught it on. Jigging in Lake Rotoiti.

Wilma Millar

Sam Bourne shows us the silverware.

From the recent Oceania Championships held in NZ 6th 7th April.

Found on the step of Turangi house.

I was doing my best to up skill the 2 handed rod and accidentally this nice hen took the Red Setter maybe 10 hook @ The Bridge Pool Tonga.

The only reason I landed her was the apparent condition and would smoke well

It tastes as we suspected...sweet moist and enuf for 3 meals / 3 of us

I would suggest any naming of angler might read ' AA' ..." Another Angler" with a ' April 1st catch'..... Just off to Patagonia now, back later to read this.

Club Lodge - Turangi The Mighty Tongariro

Robyn and John July 2014As a member of the AFAC club you will  have the privilege of using our house in central Turangi.  Turangi is the home of the mighty Tongariro.

In the image to the left we have Robyn and John (new member) who are taking advanage of the winter runs July 2014

Those who have been fortunate enough to have  fished the Tongariro during the winter runs will testify that the bows put up a tremendous fight and the heavily weighted nymph smacking you on the  back of the head is all part of the fun in Turangi!

Details for the Turangi Lodge and our very own Punui Hilton can be seen on our Lodges page here . Those who are planning to fish in the Taupo region will require a sparate license to the F & G one. The annual license commences in July 2014!

There are serveral members of the club who have extensive knowledge of the Tongorio and nearby rivers who would be very happy to share the odd tip... look out for Bob A, Frank A, Paul S, John W, Johannes K, Doug S and our own New Zealand Silver Flies Captain Neil H. Our September club trip will have a guide Neill Castles who is an very expienced and knowledgable fishman.

Whilst down in Turangi pop into Sporting Life and speak to Graham and or Jarrad for the local conditions and low down, and don't forget to mention that you're from the AFAC club!

If you belong to another fishing club and would like to use our Club Lodge then speak to Robyn our booking manager for details. The lodge is geared up for fishermen, with drying room for equipment and fish servicing area to prepare your catch!

"Goto" Fly

A popular fly in NZ is the pheasant tail nymph. This fly is the "goto" fly for many anglers in NZ and overseas.

Its easy to tie and a tutorial is available ---> HERE

Give it a go.....there are countless variations.
